Montgomery County Health Department offers educational programs to organizations, schools, worksites and the community FREE of charge.Health educators develop these programs based on grant funds determined by the Pennsylvania Department of Health and other grant sources.

Program to educate teens and adults on the importance of preventing drinking and driving.Activities include: the use of impairment simulation goggles, information on the effects of alcohol on the brain, blood alcohol concentration and PA laws regarding alcohol use.
Bike Safety
Ages 4 to 10
Program to teach children PA laws for bike helmet use, proper ways to fit a helmet and hand signals for riding a bike.Rules of the road are also emphasized.
Bus Safety
Ages 4 to 10
Program to teach children the rules of riding a school bus and how to behave at the bus stop.Arrive at the bus stop five minutes early, form a single file line to enter the bus, remain seated the entire ride, do not shout or eat on the bus and awareness of the Danger Zone are the major topics discussed in this program.
Car Seat Safety
Adult
Certified child safety seat technicians encourage active participation of the parent or caregiver so they may learn and acquire skills for proper installation and use of their child's car seat. PA laws regarding child passenger safety are also incorporated.
Colorectal Cancer
Adults and older adults
Prevention education for Colorectal health.Content includes: when to get screenings, risk factors and healthy tips to prevent colorectal cancer.
Diabetes
Adults and older adults
Prevention education for Diabetes.Content includes: proper nutrition, physical activity, risk factors and prevention methods for diabetes.
Fire Safety
Ages 4 to 10
Fire prevention program.Safety tools that are discussed include: smoke alarms, fire extinguishers, escape plans and the stop, drop and roll method of extinguishing flames.
Flu Preparedness

Annual information sent to all Long Term Care Facilities in Montgomery County providing up-to-date information regarding the Flu Vaccine, prevention and outbreak guidelines.
Hand Washing
Day care
Program teaches proper hand washing techniques to children to reduce the spread of direct contact transmissible diseases.There are four learning objectives:
Educate on what pathogens are and where they live.
Educate on the harm that microscopic organisms can cause.
Importance of proper hand washing in order to prevent the spread of illness causing organisms.
Demonstrate proper hand washing techniques.
Heart Health
Adults and older adults
Prevention program explaining healthy behaviors which lead to overall heart health including: eating healthy foods, exercising most days of the week, getting enough sleep, knowing the risk factors of heart disease and learning how to prevent them.
Hepatitis B & C
Any age as requested
Programs on Hepatitis are conducted in various settings and priority is given to those groups and individuals at most risk.Programs take place in schools, religious institutions, drug and alcohol facilities, youth centers, jails, and community centers. The content of these presentations is directed toward the expressed interest and need of the community group.The content includes, but is not limited to epidemiology, prevention, signs and symptoms, transmission and treatment.
HIV/AIDS

Programs on HIV are conducted in various settings and priority is given to those groups and individuals at most risk.Programs take place in schools, religious institutions, drug and alcohol facilities, youth centers, jails, and community centers. Home Safety
Parents and older
Program instructs parents and adults on ways to keep their home safe for themselves and their families.Tips in this program include:fire prevention, fall prevention and overall injury prevention.
Immunizations
Senior Centers; Childcare Centers; School Nurses; Healthcare Providers
Program to educate the public, as well as, professional staff on the principles of vaccination and proper immunization practices, including current guidelines on the timing and spacing of vaccines, vaccine safety, storage & handling.Strategies for improving immunization rates are also addressed.
Lead Poisoning
Community agencies (e.g., WIC, Headstarts); Healthcare Providers; Daycare Staff
Program to educate the public, as well as, professional staff on the environmental and behavioral risk factors of childhood lead poisoning.Instruction is given regarding risk reduction for lead exposure, as well as, screening and treatment options.
Lyme Disease
All ages
Program provides preventive strategies for Lyme disease including: Community risk reduction education programs in schools, providing information about Lyme disease to residents and dissemination of information on request.
Nutrition
Preschool, elementary school, adults and older adults
Program addresses proper eating habits for all ages.Contentincludes: the food guide pyramid, importance of eating 5 fruits and vegetables a day and incorporating calcium rich foods into the daily diet.
Program to educate the public about the importance of maintaining good oral health, through proper nutrition, dental hygiene and professional dental care.
Osteoporosis
Girls 10-17, adults and older adults
Program addresses the definition of osteoporosis, risk factors, bone creation and loss cycle, bone density testing, calcium-rich foods, calcium supplementation, weight-bearing exercises and home safety tips to prevent falls.
Pedestrian Safety
4 to 10 and 55+
Program focuses on pedestrian awareness of their surroundings while walking from place to place.Topics discussed included: using the sidewalk, constant eye contact with drivers and using corners and crosswalks to cross the street.
Physical Activity
Ages 4 to 10
Program addresses the importance of moving and incorporating physical activity most days of the week as a part of a healthy lifestyle.
Playground Safety
Ages 4 to 10
Program focuses on keeping children safe at the playground.Children are taught: always go to the playground with an adult or group of people, watch out for strangers and broken playground equipment the best time to go to the playground, and what to wear when playing on the playground.
Poison Prevention
Ages 4 to 8
Program to raise children’s awareness of things in the home that could be a potential poison.They are taught not to eat or drink anything unless their parents say it’s ok.
Rabies Prevention
All ages
Program to reduce risk-associated behavior with animals, therefore, lowering the number of animal bite cases.
Seat Belt Safety
All ages
Program addresses PA’s current seatbelt law for all ages.Discussion of the proper way to wear a seat belt, the purpose of the seatbelt and the use of the seatbelt with a booster seat are the major points discussed in the program
Skin Cancer/ Sun Safety
All ages
Program addresses various skin protection methods to prevent skin cancer later in life.Using hats, clothing and sunscreen and staying out of the sun at the hottest times are some topics discussed.
STD
Any age as requested
Programs on STD are conducted in various settings and priority is given to those groups and individuals at most risk.Programs take place in schools, religious institutions, drug and alcohol facilities, youth centers, jails, and community centers. Tuberculosis
Staff of Long-term care centers, Community agencies, Healthcare Providers, Prisons, Drug & Alcohol/MH Centers.
Program to educate staff of various agencies about the current guidelines for the prevention and treatment of Tuberculosis, including: targeted skin testing, contact investigations, proper mantoux placement and interpretation, and infection control measures.
Suicide Prevention
All ages
Program to raise awareness that suicide can be prevented.
Water Pollution
Grades 2 through 5
Program teaches children about everyday pollution such as trash and yard wastes and their impact on local watersheds.Also, it empowers students to make a difference within their schools and throughout their communities.This interactive program lasts approximately 45 minutes.
Water Safety
Ages 4 to 10
Program to teach children the rules of the swimming pool, focusing on swimming with a buddy, obeying the lifeguard and being aware when swimming in water.
